A stable presence: Rocking M
sticks to the beaten path

The owners of Rocking M Stables have watched Dallas grow up
around them.

class at the Rocking M Stables. |
Once nestled in pastureland far from the city, the Rocking
M now falls under the shadow of the North Dallas skyline.
Riders must sometimes raise their voices over the din of
traffic along the trails wedged between Walnut Hill Lane and
Fair Oaks Avenue.
Yet somehow, the Rocking M manages to feel removed from the
city, much as it was when Tommy Ernest Mayes bought the
property almost 50 years ago as a place to rock on the porch
and watch horses.
And that's how his family, which still owns the land, plans
to keep it.
"I think people are comforted to drive by here and see
horses," says Molly Mayes, granddaughter-in-law of the late
Mr. Mayes. "It gives you peace of mind here in the city."
The Mayes family could have sold out a long time ago. With
nearby homes going for as much as $400,000, the acre and a
half that the stable sits on could bring the owners a tidy sum
of cash.
But the Rocking M is here to stay, say members of the Mayes
clan, who added a covered arena 16 months ago as part of their
commitment to maintaining the urban riding stable.
"We've been here so long, we're a part of the community,"
Mrs. Mayes says. "We're in it for the love of horses, not for
the money."
With about 125 students, the Rocking M has riding school
four days a week, where kids learn dressage and horsemanship.
They also learn to "tack" their own horses – horse talk for
putting their own saddles, bits and bridles on their horses.
"We're not a stable that has the horses tacked up and ready
to ride when you get here," Mrs. Mayes says. "You have to do
it yourself. It teaches the kids responsibility, and they
don't even know they're learning it."
And that is part of the reason the Mayes family carries on
the tradition.
"Our goal is to help raise responsible citizens through
learning and good horsemanship," she says. "And we love these
kids. It's very fulfilling."

Molly Mayes grooms one of the horses at the Rocking M
Stables. Her husband, Mike, has childhood memories of
visiting his grandfather, Tommy Ernest Mayes, at the
stables. |
Put simply, the Rocking M is the Mayes' passion.
Family legacy
Mike Mayes, the grandson of the original owner, grew up
visiting his grandfather at the stable, and wants to see his
legacy thrive.
"My mom would deposit me here after school," he says. "I
spent my days catching snakes, running in the woods and riding
the trails."
When Mr. Mayes was a boy, the Rocking M was more of a farm
than a stable. His grandfather, Tommy, who had been part of
the Shriners' Hella Black Horse Patrol, had bought 10 acres as
a place to keep his horse "Buzz" and board a few others.
But Tommy Mayes also took pride in his large vegetable
patches and a henhouse.
When he died in 1992, his grandson took over.
The Rocking M sold about 8.5 acres to the city in 1978 to
make way for the Walnut Hill bridge, which now borders the
stables' jump area. The horses don't seem fazed by the
constant traffic, yet riders are so close to the road they can
see children in passing cars excitedly pointing and waving.
It wasn't until several years ago, after Mr. Mayes met and
married Molly, his second wife, that the Rocking M grew from
boarding and riding stables into a training facility that
started turning out riders good enough to compete in national
tournaments.
A blind date brought the two together. He was divorced with
two children. And she was trying to get through the grief of
losing her 5 ˝ -year-old daughter with cerebral palsy to an
aneurysm.

Reilly Wren, 7, heads to the tack room.
|
"I needed them and they needed me," she says. "It was a
great match."
It didn't hurt that when Mrs. Mayes was growing up, "horses
were my life."
And when she married into the family, she fulfilled a dream
of working with horses and children.
"This is my passion, but I never thought I could make a
living at it," she says.
They joke that theirs is a mixed marriage – she rides in an
English saddle and he prefers Western.
Mr. Mayes, a Flower Mound police detective on leave to
attend college, helps out with the exercise and care of the
horses but is not as consumed by the business as his wife.
"To be in this business there has to be a real love for
horses," he says. "I think everyone here has that. For me it's
also that this has been in our family for 50 years. It's a
family tradition to carry this on."
Faithful fans
The Rocking M boards 48 horses and has a busy riding school
and a leasing program for students who can't afford their own
horses.
For many visitors, the Rocking M represents an escape from
the hectic pace of city life.
"This is one of the best things happening in Dallas," says
Dominque Mamula, who rides along with her daughters, ages 9
and 11. "I'm out here seven days a week. I ride for other
people who can't make it out to exercise their horses.
Yesterday I got on a horse and galloped up to Royal Lane. For
me, it's therapy."
But for all its country feel with about 22 miles of trails
abutting the White Rock Trail, the Rocking M is undeniably
part of the big city.
Grandpa may not have had to lock the doors back in the
1950s, but the Rocking M now has a security system with alarms
even attached to the stalls. Employees are there all day and
much of the night, and neighbors watch out for the place.
The stables are near some of Lake Highlands' most affluent
neighborhoods, but it is also not far from the overcrowded and
impoverished Vickery Meadow area of Dallas.
So the Rocking M looks for ways to help the community.

Christine Molina, 14, Mallory McGroarty, 15, Katie
Shank, 13, and Claire McFarland, 13, (from left) work on
a quick-release safety knot before a recent evening
practice. |
Last year, the Rocking M and its young riders held parties
for homeless kids from the Stewpot, a soup kitchen for the
homeless, and the Family Place, a domestic violence shelter.
"Most of our kids live in the shadows of downtown," says
Suzanne Dwight, director of children and youth for the Stewpot
soup kitchen. "Most of them had never seen a horse or other
parts of Dallas, even. To be able to ride a horse or go on a
hay ride is a unique opportunity for them. Some of our kids
were a little intimidated by the horses at first but the kids
and staff at the stables really helped them get over that."
Four times a year, the Rocking M also participates in
picking up litter at Harry S. Moss Park, which is adjacent to
the stables.
It's all part of helping parents raise responsible
children, Mrs. Mayes says.
"We enjoy the park and the trails, and we want to do our
part to take care of them," she says. "We're a part of this
community and we want the kids to know what that means."
Most days, in the after-school hours particularly, children
and teenagers hang out around the stables, grooming their
horses, talking to each other, riding in the ring or petting
the resident rooster, Mr. Chicken.
In the covered arena, girls clad in khaki riding pants and
tall black riding boots trot horses around the ring. When
they're not training, they share inside jokes and laugh.
"This is what it's all about – kids having fun," says
riding instructor Becky Brown, who has taught at the Rocking M
for 13 years. "We have kids who grow up here."
One of those is her own 18-year-old daughter Rebecca, who
successfully competes in events on a horse nicknamed "Twinkle
Toes," who, they say, is a grandson of Seattle Slew.
"I love the family atmosphere out here," Rebecca says. "All
the kids are friends, and you need that. This sport is really
hard, and sometimes you don't want to come out and work. But
then you get here, and you're with the other kids, you want to
do it."
Ms. Mamula, who grew up riding in England, loves the
camaraderie of the stables and is happy her children spend so
much time there.
"You can feel the community of the kids here," she said.
"In the school world, some kids get cut out of life, but here
everyone's a part of things."

Lone Star Horse Report
Rocking M Stables
Fifty years ago, when Dallas barber Tommy
Ernest Mayes bought 10 acres on White Rock Creek, it was way out in
the country.
A founding member of the Hella Black Horse Patrol, a mounted unit of
the Shriners, he wanted a place of his own to keep his black Quarter
Horse Buzz and to board a few others. Over the years, the city grew
out to his farm, and the surrounding acreage was designated as
parkland.
Tommy's grandson Mike spent his weekends and summers riding at the
Rocking M, as the property was called. In 1978, the city of Dallas
acquired 8.5 acres of it to accommodate the Walnut Hill bridge
across the creek.
Mike, now a police detective with the town of Flower Mound, managed
the Rocking M for the family as a boarding stable and riding school.
A decade after his grandfather's death in 1992, he purchased the
remaining acre and a half, and he and his wife Molly began an
extensive renovation of the facilities.
Today, the 47 stalls are all occupied, and the riding school has 125
students, three-quarters of them youth.
Molly, a successful show jumping competitor and a certified Level 1
American Riding Instructor, runs the boarding operation.
Occupants range from the humblest pony to the most expensive
European warmblood. There's even a "Texas Ultimate Sport Horse," a
humorous moniker for one student's grade gelding that is doing well
at the preliminary level in eventing.
"We provide full-service boarding," says Molly. "Regular exercise,
grooming, an individualized feeding program, sheet and blanket
cleaning, and veterinary and farrier care. We have personnel on the
premises from 4:30 in the morning to 9:30 at night, and each of the
stalls is wired on a security alarm system."
All the newest stalls are what she calls "master suites," a roomy 14
by 18 feet. Fresh shavings are purchased in bulk from England
Products of Dallas.
Veterinarians Kent Arnold of Terrell and Scooter Brown of Frisco are
responsible for the horses' good health, and farrier Mike Lewis of
Crowley keeps them all well-shod.
Among the longtime boarders is Joann O'Brien, who has ridden at
Rocking M almost daily for 20 years. She values the family
atmosphere of the stables and the access to over 25 miles of trails
in the adjacent parks, where wildlife is abundant. Her current mount
is George, a colorful blue-eyed Spotted Saddle Horse.
Becky Brown, who was riding when North Park Mall was still pasture
land, is the head instructor. She attended Talland School of
Equitation in England and has been certified by the British Horse
Society as an International Level 1 Instructor for over 30 years.
She was also an instructor at Willow Bend Polo & Hunt Club, a guest
instructor for the U.S. Pony Club, and has taught horsemanship
courses at Eastfield Community College. Becky is past president of
the Dallas Dressage Club and Therapeutic Riding of Texas (TROT) and
is a local dressage judge and eventing coach. She came to Rocking M
12 years ago to help Mike get the business growing.
Among her longtime students who have excelled in competition are
Stephen Rogers and Caroline Sibley. A high school senior bound for
the University of Virginia, Stephen is a swimmer and National Merit
Scholar who won the U.S.Equestrian Federation Junior National
Eventing championship in Kentucky last year aboard his Australian
Thoroughbred, Yogi. Caroline Sibley placed fourth in the U.S.
Dressage Federation Southwest Finals in October.
Becky's own daughter Rebecca, a senior at Ursuline Academy, competed
successfully in East Coast horse trials last year on a Seattle Slew
grandson nicknamed Twinkle Toes, who "jumps like a cat."
Yet Becky insists that Rocking M is not primarily a competition
barn. "Our emphasis is on classical horsemanship and safety, and our
programs are based on U.S. Pony Club standards." The riding year
runs from September to May, culminating with an in-house show, the
students' "day of glory."
Assisting Becky are Barb Werback, a registered veterinary technician
with over 35 years of experience in training and showing horses, who
teaches dressage and jumping, and Pam Coffin, an eventing and show
jumping competitor who earned her instructor certification from
Morven Equestrian Institute in Virginia. Molly, who plans to advance
to Level 2 in ARIA, also gives lessons. A Dallas native, she began
her equestrian career at an early age with Major Valko, a Hungarian
riding master who helped introduce dressage to Texas. On her
Thoroughbred Born Free, Molly competed successfully in regional
jumping competitions for many years.
Lessons are conducted in the new 147' x 68' covered arena. "Besides
the State Fair, it's the only covered arena in the city of Dallas,"
says Molly. A mirror on the east side helps riders perfect their
posture, and black shattered tire rubber mixed with sand makes for
well-cushioned footing.
Rocking M's weeklong summer camps are extremely popular. The daily
schedule includes riding lessons, unmounted theory sessions, hacks
in the park, and games. The camps - beginner, intermediate and
advanced - sell out every year, and there is a waiting list.
The Mayeses feel a strong commitment to sharing Rocking M with the
wider community. They host an annual Christmas party for children
from The Family Place, which assists victims of family violence.
They sponsor a quarterly cleanup of neighboring Harry S. Moss Park.
Last year, along with Sewell Lexus, they sponsored a fund-raiser for
the Saturday school program of The Stewpot, a ministry for the
homeless. Even the used box fans from the stalls are regularly
donated to a charity.
Plans for 2005 may include the start of an inner-city riding
program, matching abused kids and abused horses.
These efforts for children have a special meaning for Molly. "I lost
my own daughter," she says. "This is very fulfilling for me."
"This place is a gem," summarizes Becky. "I never buy a lottery
ticket. I've won it already."

training center for adults and children, celebrates their success in
2004 by giving back to the community this holiday season. On
December 19, children from The Family Place, a non-profit
organization that assists women and children victims of family
violence, will be treated to a full afternoon of fun and games
hosted by the Rocking M Stables. Festivities include a visit from
Santa Claus in a Hummer sleigh, holiday toys and treats, pony rides,
horse care demonstrations, an equestrian jumping event, a horse show
and more!
In the spirit of the holidays,
Rocking M owner Molly Mayes says, “Rocking M is an extremely
important asset to the Dallas metroplex and we are happy to support
The Family Place. The children enjoy coming to the Stables and we
love having them visit. We very much appreciate Sewell Hummer
Cadillac for their contribution of a 2005 Hummer as Santa’s sleigh
for this occasion.”
According to Lori Hardy,
Director of Residential Children’s Services for The Family Place,
“The children can’t wait to see Santa and the horses at the Rocking
M. It is going to be special day that they and their moms won’t soon
forget. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to provide this
exciting experience for our shelter clients during the holidays.”
The party marks a celebration of
the successes of 2004. This past year, Rocking M owners Michael and
Molly Mayes raised funds for improvements to the 49-year old
stables. Expanded facilities, a new covered arena and additional
riding classes have contributed to
growth this year.
Throughout the year, Rocking M

Rocking M Stables Hosts Second Annual Fall Extravaganza
Nationally acclaimed
show team demonstrates riding exhibition combined with fund raiser
November 7, 2004, Dallas,
Texas – Rocking M
Stables, a family-owned equestrian education and training center for
adults and children, today announced plans for a second annual Fall
Extravaganza. Rocking M is located at 7807 Fair Oaks, Dallas, Texas.
The celebration begins on
Sunday, November 7, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. with the exhibition of
quadrille, gaited horses, dressage and spectacular jumping. A live
and silent auction as well as raffle drawings throughout the
afternoon will be conclude by approximately 7:00 p.m. A Texas-style
chili dinner will be served with all the fixin’s and great
fellowship.
With over 200 attendees at the
2003 event, the Rocking M support committee generated $10,000 to
benefit improvements, additions and philanthropic causes for the
Dallas community primarily in support of programs to benefit less
fortunate children and neglected horses.
The very modest goal for 2004 is
to secure $35,000 in funding. Competition among the children has
already heated up as they sell raffle tickets representing a chance
to win riding sessions with Becky Brown, the highly sought-after and
nationally acclaimed trainer for Rocking M Stables. In addition to
all these activities, independent donations are certainly welcome.
“We share the excitement and
pride of our employees, our students – both children and adults -
and our family as the Rocking M Stables approaches its 49th
anniversary”, said owners Molly and Michael Mayes. “We’re not only
sustaining the dreams of Michael’s grandfather and founder, Tommy
Ernest Mayes, we’re making
significant enrichments to this family facility that allows a
completely fulfilling equestrian experience in a manner he’d be
proud of.”
Sponsorships for the future new
facilities, renovations and equipment:
Mirror sponsors - $6,000
Restroom sponsors - $15,000
Viewing and lecture room sponsors - $25,000
Elevated porch - $7,500
Rocking M Stables is promoting
the entire equestrian experience with totally responsible
horsemanship. During the past few years, the Stables have expanded
from a boarding stable and still maintains the family environment
while representing a training facility for excellent horsemanship.
Rocking M Stables educational programs include dressage, eventing,
equestrian riding programs for children and adults, boarding,
support of horsemanship scholarships, barn management, field trips,
internships and much more.
A dedicated
and amazing committee has given time and creative contributions to

Rocking M
Stable Celebrates Ongoing Renovations and Prepares for Successful
2004 Summer Camp with New Covered
Arena
Minutes from Downtown Dallas in the Prestigious Highland Park/Park
Cities Area
Dallas, Texas
– Rocking M Stable today announced the continued expansion and
renovation of the family-owned facility just off Central Expressway
and Walnut Hill. Surprising to many, the former farm and horse
pasture is nestled minutes from downtown Dallas and has successfully
escaped the bustle of city life as what was the former outskirts of
Dallas grew to meet the hen houses and gardens. As the Rocking M
approaches its 50th anniversary, owners Molly and Michael
Mayes reflect on the dreams of Michael’s grandfather and founder
Tommy Ernest Mayes.
“Tommy passed away in 1992. He
built the Rocking M with the dream of sitting in his rocking chair,
enjoying horses in the pasture and his life. Today the dream lives
on for both adults and children,” said Molly Mayes, co-owner and
barn manager. “Rocking M means so much to our family and we’re
committed to helping the entire equestrian experience through
responsible horsemanship.”
Under Molly’s diligent watch,
Rocking M has greatly expanded from a boarding stable. Although the
property still maintains the family environment, it now represents a
training facility for excellent horsemanship. Improvements will
continue through fundraisers and sponsorships by leaders in the
community. Celebrities and local dignitaries as well as their
children and grandchildren have saddled up and relished their
learning experience at the Rocking M.
“We’ve not done all this alone.
The Dallas City Council, the Dallas Park and Recreation Department
and a host of professionals supported our efforts,” said Michael
Mayes, grandson of the late Tommy Mayes. “Additionally, for 12 years
we have been fortunate for have Becky Brown, one of the most
respected and competent school masters, trainers and coaches in this
area. We’ve surrounded ourselves with the best in the business and
Rocking M now enjoys those relationships as we continue to improve
the quality of our services.”
Rocking M services
include dressage, eventing, equestrian riding program for children,
boarding, support of horsemanship scholarships, barn management,
field trips, internships and much more.
